THORNE
BAY SPORTS EVENTS
Thorne Bay School has added some fun to their sports events this year.
You may hear the school's own band, under the direction of Will
Humphrey, entertaining spectators pre-game, during the game, at half
time and after the game. The new band, formed this school year, made its
first public appearance at the Community Dinner in December. A New
Wolverine Mascot may also be there to pep up everyone’s spirits for
sporting events.

FIRE
& EMS CALLED INTO ACTION
An early morning fire destroyed two
homes in Thorne Bay on Saturday, January 12th. The long time residents,
Don & Barbie Krause and Eddie & Pam Nelson and three grandchildren
escaped with only the clothes they had on. Pam and one of the children
sustained minor burns as they exited the home with flames literally
following them to the door.
The 6:20 a.m. fire is suspected of starting in a shop between the two
properties and strong winds blew the flames in both directions igniting
the buildings on either side. Firefighters and EMS personnel and
residents of Thorne Bay responded with hoses, fire trucks and an
ambulance. The heat was so intense that by the time it was
discovered the fire had engulfed the mobile home and burned through half
the house.
Quick action by the local Fire & EMS squads and many volunteers saved
the next home in line. Many individuals and businesses on and off the
Island have come to the aid of the Krauses and Nelsons with donations of
clothing, cash, and food for which they are very grateful. It will be
sometime before they will be able to rebuild what they have lost.

PRIZES
AWARDED IN THORNE BAY LIGHTING CONTEST
The prizes for the annual Holiday Lighting Contest in Thorne Bay were
awarded on December 24th to the winners. Lights and decorations started
going up before the beginning of the contest, December 1st, 2007. A total
of $1000.00 in cash prizes was given out this year to the many homes
that brightened the streets of Thorne Bay. Judging was done by
representatives of the Thorne Bay Business Association. With so many
great displays this year, the judges had to designate ties in many of the
categories. The majority of the prize money awarded comes from the
annual auction that the Business Association conducts during the
Christmas Bazaar held in the Thorne Bay School in November. All the
auction items are donated by Business Association members.
